Hi friends, have you ever found yourself in this situation? You pick up some new vocabulary, and before you know it, they've already slipped your mind? If you can relate , I suggest watching this video till the end.
I'm Coco, an English teacher who has helped countless students learn English. Just like you, I've encountered those tricky memory lapses with words. But don't worry! Over the years, I've developed some very useful and effective techniques to tackle them. Today, I'm excited to share with you these methods, hoping they'll be as beneficial for you as they have been for me. I promise, you'll pick up English much faster and better with these tricks. . Are you ready? Let's get started.
Let's start with "Learning English in context." I wouldn't recommend simply memorising words by translating them into your native language. Let me share with you an example from my teaching experience. During one of my sessions with a Chinese student, we came across a new word, "layout." She asked for its meaning and expected me to provide her with a Mandarin explanation. However, I decided not to. Instead, I went for the full English explanation. You might be wondering why, since I speak Mandarin fluently. Well, the truth is, learning a word in your native language seems like a quick and easy fix, but it doesn't always result in effective learning. So, basically, my focus is on guiding my students to think in English. Which, believe it or not, is a shortcut to mastering the language. Instead of offering a direct translation, I explained that "layout" refers to the arrangement of things. To help her understand, I provided an example. I explained that if someone asked me about my living room setup, I would say: "In the middle of the living room, there is a TV. In front of it, there's a table. Next to the TV, there are bookshelves. And, there's also a chair with a lamp next to it. All of these things create the layout of the living room." After I said it, I was so delighted to see her reaction; she was so excited and said, "Ah, I get it. It's actually easier than I thought.I don’t have to translate it in my head next time I use the word. Saving me time" That's it! That's what we aim to do – make learning easier, make our brain less stressed about translating in our head. Using this method not only helped her grasp the meaning immediately but also provided her with an insight into how to use the word in context. Learning a language isn't just about memorising words; it's about actively using them.
Next, let's dive into "Explaining words using ones you already know." I know what's on your mind, especially if you're just starting out with English. You might be thinking, "I don’t know that much English, what on earth are you asking me to do??" Well, It's pretty normal if you're feeling a bit unsure and overwhelmed, but trust me, as you start picking up more words, it'll get easier. Let AI techniques help you with the method. For example, you can write a question in an AI chat box when you come across a new word, such as "Can you explain the word 'astonish' in simple terms for beginners, and provide an example sentence?" Using this approach, you'll be amazed by how straightforward and clear the explanation can be. Here's the answer you might |get in response: "Thinking of 'astonish' is like experiencing a really big surprise! For example, if a magician performs an impressive trick, it might astonish the audience, meaning it might surprise the audience. See? It's like using a word you already know, "surprise," to grasp a new word, "astonish." It's not too difficult, is it? I mean, it's not exactly rocket science. Once you get the hang of it, you'll notice your vocabulary expanding, and you'll begin to recognize connections between words. Eventually, you'll find yourself using words effortlessly, even ones you didn't realise you knew. That's when you'll know you're really making progress with English.
Third, create your personal vocabulary notebook. These words in your notebook will become key players when you speak in the future, so the method is super important. Whenever you encounter new vocabulary, write down the word in the following format: Let’s use the word astonish again, for example: Word: astonish, Part of Speech: [verb], Meaning: [Thinking of 'astonish' is like experiencing a really big surprise], Example Sentence: [The magician’s performance astonished the audience]. So keep adding the word you come across everyday to your notebook in the format and review it daily. It's even better if you can create a new sentence with the word every time you practise. Day by day, you'll start noticing the transformation..
Finally, let's add a bit of fun with a monthly storytelling time by using your vocabulary notebook. With all that practice you've been putting in everyday, you probably know these words inside out by now. It's time to get creative! Choose a word and make a story around it. Let’s use the word Take as an example. Here's how I did it: "Picture this – I decided to treat myself to dinner at this glamorous restaurant the other day. The place was decorated with elegant chandeliers, setting the perfect vibe for some nice selfies. As I settled into my seat, the waiter came over and asked what I'd like to drink. I went for tea, then she asked, 'Do you take sugar with your tea?' This is the story that I made up by using my daily experience. Just like that, I nailed the word 'take.' It's moments like these that make all that hard work paid off.. Using new words in these little stories not only helps me remember them better but also adds a fun twist to learn the new vocab. You know, it's like chatting with a friend – relaxed and easy.
All right, all these methods are my secret ways of memorising vocab. I’ve been using them for more than 10 years. If I could do it, I believe you can do it too. It's not a miracle, it's about believing in yourself and being persistent. Thank you very much for watching this video. I hope you found it useful. See you, bye.
